Cellist, conductor, pianist, composer - there is hardly a more multi-talented musician than Mstislav Leopoldovitch Rostropovitch. Born in 1927, in Baku, on the Black Sea, the artist has more concerti and sonatas in his repertiore than any other cellist. From London to Berlin, from Moscow to Paris, he is lauded in overflowing halls; at the Vienna State Opera, he conducted Prokoffief's "War and Peace"; he made splash headlines with his complete recording of "Eugen Onegin"; with the circumspection of an experienced pianist, he accompanies his wife, the celebrated Russian soprano, Galina Vischnevskaya, in leider concerts; he has composed a number of piano concerti and string quartets, which have delighted connoisseurs. In Moscow, he played 41 cello concerti in eleven evenings and in London, 31 concerti in nine evenings; more than half of the works were compositions of our century, some of which were pieces dedicated to Rostropovitch or premiered by him.
