The Christmas selection includes 22 holiday favorites, spanning 800 years of carol writing and carol singing. Each songs had a history that we have tried to uncover; each history or anecdote adds to the understanding and enjoyment of a carol, for the singers and listeners alike. Three Songs date from the 12th to 16th Century, One "Silent Night" was written in the early 19th Century. The others are closer in time; they were written between 1847 and 1984. There are secular carols and sacred carols; some have political motivations, others are sort of "feel-good" or escapist carols written in times of war or economic depression. Christmas and New Year are a time where we celebrate, but also to reflect.
