EnsembleSpectrum and UBU Collection proudly present an album which is very dear to us. James Tenney was one of the most influential figures of music and theory of music after 1970s and his legacy is one of the most reverberant of current days. With the arrival of the celebrations of James Tenney's 90th birthday we considered adding various pieces on this album, for example great ensemble pieces like Critical Band or Voices. However, we decided to record pieces, which are unavailable or were never released. On this album you can find rarities like CHORALES for Harmonic Piano or Chromatic Canon (both in their respective JI tunings) or Timbre Ring a unique one-note piece from 1970s. An excerpt from liner notes written by Michael Pisaro-Liu for this album: "This well-programmed disc by EnsembleSpectrum charts a path through Tenney’s harmonic approaches, forming something like an arc. Taken in chronological order, the pieces move from timbral variants of a single pitch (Timbre Ring, 1971); to the exploration of limited scalar resources (in this case, octatonic), with CHORALES, 1973; to the gradual saturation of the 12-note field (Chromatic Canon, 1980/83); to an exploration of the pitch continuum (Glissade, 1982) and the return to a kind of tonal harmony, informed by all the explorations that had come before, with Harmonium #7, 2000. Like a gestalt from one of Tenney’s pieces, we would, in this formation, have a kind of wedge that expands from a single tone (Timbre Ring) to a point of maximum saturation in Glissade, ending with a contraction of a kind that implies perceptual transformation (Harmonium #7)." credits released August 10, 2024 EnsembleSpectrum We are a chamber ensemble specializing in 20th and 21st-century music. Our passion is to present new and lesser-known works, pushing the boundaries of traditional repertoire. With members educated at prestigious art universities across Europe, we bring diverse perspectives to our performances while we strive to engage audiences with dynamic and thought-provoking concert programmes. Since our establishment in 2012, we have premiered over fifty works, including numerous Slovak premieres, and have been featured at renowned festivals both in Slovakia and abroad. Our programming revolves around three creative directions: works by young composers, Slovak music after 1945, and international music after 1945. From French spectralism to Slovak avant-garde, American experimentalism, and European postmodernism, we embrace a wide range of musical styles and movements. Our dedication to promoting contemporary art extends beyond performances, as we have released albums on various labels, including our own, UBU Collection (utopická brána umenia – Utopian Gate of Art), aimed at disseminating innovative music.
