This record has been pressed and distributed on a limited, non-commercial basis, and the producers do not intend to realize a profit. This album has been made as a tribute to the multiple talents of Messrs. Cahn, Van Heusen and Scharf, and members of this Original Cast album. Their combined efforts on this delightful score just had to be "Rescued From Oblivion."
* * *
Though titled "The Return To Oz" this album is actually an unofficial original cast soundtrack of the [l300782] animated feature-length motion picture "Journey Back To Oz" that premiered December 1972 in London theaters and June 1974 in the United States.
Despite being unofficial, it supplements the later official original cast soundtrack release ( [r5060096] ) because it includes deleted music and songs (notably one by Peter Lawford) and some differing voice-acting.
Many songs on this album are titled differently than those on the later album but are not actually different songs.
The Japanese liner notes are not evidence of Japanese origin. It is a spoof. The back design of the 1974 MCA Records Japanese release of the motion picture soundtrack of "Anatasia" was copied, altered only to remove the MCA Records identification and add new tracklist information and an image of Liza Minnelli.
Most of the vocals and voice-acting was recorded in 1962 and these sessions were Liza Minnelli's first professional recording job. The earliest vinyl release of music from "Journey Back To Oz" is a Liza Minnelli record that was given out at American test screenings of the movie in 1974.
