Sleeve Notes: C.W.S. (MANCHESTER) BAND The C.W.S. (Manchester) Band has enjoyed over a half century of music making and today has a reputation as a concert combination which is second to none. Like the great organisation whose name it bears, it began in a humble way—by a group of employees at the C.W.S. Tobacco Factory, Manchester in 1900. In 1946 the band was completely reorganised and adopted its present title. Since then with the patronage and support of the Directors, the band, with its consistently successful contesting record over the years has firmly established itself, but it is perhaps in its concert perfor- mances throughout the British Isles, that it has really won its devotees. Through broadcasting and recordings the band has gained a big following overseas. Several visits to Switzerland have been highly successful, as was also a journey in July 1972 to the Canadian "Brass Band Festival" at Niagara Falls, Ontario. Much of the band's success from the fifties has been due to the inspiration of ALEX MORTIMER who had guided the hand through its most exciting years to date. Since 1970 he has held the position of Musical Adviser to the Band and still keeps "a very active interest in its affairs, conducting the band on occasions. In April 1972, DEREK GARSIDE was appointed Musical Director after 25 years in the Principal Cornet chair, and both of them, along with the members of the C.W.S. (Manchester) Band, can today look back on a record of nearly 300 broadcasts, several T.V. appearances, 15 LP Records with some 150 titles recorded, and contesting successes which include, 2 National Championships, *l6 times runner up), 4 British Open Championships, + and 11 North Western Area Championship wins.
