About "Libro de Música de Dª Maria Josefa Marco":
Manuscript of the end of the s. XVIII, found in the MM. Carmelitas de Corella (Navarra) in 1980. The name refers to its former owner M.ª Josefa Marco. The book, in a landscape form (28 x 21 cms) and covered with vellum, contains 76 musical works corresponding to various works for key: dances, sonatas, contradictions, etc. And even a miniature of "Hayden", which for the moment has not been located among those of the famous Viennese musician. One of the dances contained in the book, Gaita Gallega has the same melody as in 1762 used by Fr. Antonio Soler in his Ciego and lazarillo and also appears in the popular Basque melody Makilla aundia dantza and in another Catalan Christmas song (The popular "Nadala" The Noi de la Mare). Also, the melody titled Zortziko (written in compass of 6/8 and not in 5/8) was collected in the s. XVIII by the French musician Charles-Simon Catel (1773-1830) in his operetta L'Auberge de Bagnères, and served as the basis for the well-known work Capricho Basque, op. 24, by Pablo Sarasate *. This cantinela still subsists in the current Basque repertoire in the popular song Donostiako iru damatxo.
As to the origin of the Book, it is not known if M.ª Josefa Marco was its copyist, compiler or simply proprietary. It is probably an autochthonous compilation, which shows the musical level of Corella or its surroundings in the eighteenth century, and which is not far from the enlightened spirit of the Societies of Friends of the Country, so interrelated (Tudela was constituted in 1778 and undoubtedly influenced nearby populations such as Cascante and Corella).
Discography. Some dances and sonatas of the "Libro" have been collected this record.
